Salomon Skyrun another success
It takes a special kind of athlete to run 1 00km at an average 6.7km per hour across mountains through the alpine wasteland of the Southern Drakensberg, carrying your own gear – but that is what Bruce Arnett (Hi-Tec) and Iain Don-Wauchope achieved to finish ahead of the 39 other athletes in the grueling Salomon Skyrun, hosted in association with Thule. The alliance between Skyrun veteran Arnett and novice Don-Wauchope was an example of the comradeship formed by trail runners competing in this race that includes crossing Mac Dhui (3001m), the highest peak in the Eastern Cape. Jeanette Steyn was the first woman to finish at the Tiffendell Ski resort in 23 hours. This year a shorter 60km race was introduced as an option to encourage wider participation in the Salomon Skyrun.
